Queer around the World

Queerbrarians Summer Reading Challenge

Hello readers of diverse literature!

For the third time we are starting a summer reading challenge inspired by the summer reading club (SLC). After having read banned books (books banned from U.S. libraries) last year, this time we want to focus on travelling, different countries and continents.

Every book read for this challenge should relate to queerness and also one of our challenge categories. For example, we have categories for different continents. Another category asks you to read a book in a language that you do not regularly read in. For our gay travel index category you can read a book from a country that has a low rating in the Gay Travel Index. There are also some general categories.

Instead of a classic square bingo sheet we have prepared a round travel card: the goal is to read one book for each category in a ring and travel around the globe, or to read all four prompts in one section.

Remember that a read book can only be counted for one category, even if it matches more than one.

You have no idea which books to read? No worries! We have put together a collection of queer books for every category. You can take titles from our list or simply use it for inspiration to find books yourself.

We want to remind you that it is not important to read as many books as possible. This challenge is meant to be fun! If you want to discuss your book experiences you can use the social media hashtag #QSRC (Queerbrarians Summer Reading Challenge). You are also welcome to send us your filled in travel cards, book recommendations and feedback via e-mail at librarians@queerbrarians.de. We also have compiled a StoryGraph challenge that you can join.

You can find content warnings about the different books on StoryGraph or the website Book Trigger Warnings. We raise no claim to completeness for the content warnings on either website.

In case you want to advertise this challenge and spread the word we have prepared a printable flyer that you can put up or hand out.

We wish you a great reading experience and an awesome summer!
