Banned Books Edition – in English

Welcome back, dear readers of diverse literature!
After having so much fun with our queer book reading challenge last year, we are once again organizing a reading challenge based on the Sommerleseclub (SLC). This year, we have come up with something special for the book selection. We will be reading books that have been banned or proposed for banning in U.S. schools and school libraries, and we invite you to read along!
Since the 2021/22 school year, the writers‘ association PEN America has been documenting these cases and publishing lists on the website. You can find an overview of the affected books since then in this complete list, which we compiled based on PEN America’s lists.
Throughout the summer — from June 1st to September 22nd — we can read books together, have fun, learn new things, and think about why these books were probably banned. You are sure to discover some great stories and perhaps find a new favorite book.
You can record the books you’ve read on a bingo card, which is available in color and in black and white. There are also downloadable formats for Instagram in color below. Try to cover as many categories as possible. We have put together a few reading suggestions for each category, which you can download as a PDF.
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is open to all books on the PEN America lists or our complete list that fit into one of the given categories. Important: Categories can refer to the book’s topic, as well as to the author and books that fit several categories should only be counted once.
After the challenge ends, send us your completed bingo cards via email at librarians@queerbrarians.de. We will post them on our website along with the others to showcase and celebrate your successes. There may be a little surprise for one or more bingo(s).
How and wherelese you track the books you read is up to you. For those who want to, we have created a Queerbrarians Summer Reading Challenge on StoryGraph.
Ultimately: It’s more important to have fun with the challenge than to read as many books as possible. If you would like to discuss the books you have read or suggest titles for the categories, share them on social media using the hashtag #QSRC.
We look forward to many readers joining our Queerbrarians Summer Reading Challenge!
Happy Reading and Read Banned Books – It’s good for everyone!
